Norman: 21 trains a day across nine crossings, with one underpass

A typical train clears a Norman crossing in 3–6 minutes. Each train closes several crossings at once, about 21 times a day, and a slow or stopped train can hold them far longer.

1–2 hrs

a day each central crossing is closed

Estimate: 21 trains × 3–6 minutes = 63–126 minutes of a 24-hour day.

3,100–6,200

vehicles a day arrive at a closed gate across the nine crossings

Estimate: 70,790 daily vehicles × share of the day gates are down, assuming traffic spread evenly.

2

grade-separated crossings in town: the Robinson St underpass and SH 9

Every route between them crosses at grade. FRA inventory lists Robinson's old at-grade crossing as closed.

Who's waiting

Lindsey and Boyd carry the most traffic.

Every one of these crossings is an emergency services route, and each sees about 21 trains a day: 11 by day and 10 at night, including Amtrak's Heartland Flyer.

All nine are public at-grade crossings on BNSF's line through central Norman, listed north to south. The USDOT number is the national ID FRA uses for every crossing, and it's the ID Trainwatch attaches to each logged event. Source: FRA Crossing Inventory, July 10, 2026 update.

Each bar is one train at the Lindsey St crossing (DOT 012208X). On a normal day the minutes look small. Two problem trains add more closed time than six ordinary ones. Over a whole day, this one crossing is closed for about 1 hour and 50 minutes.

OU gameday: a 911 call with five crossings blocked

On an OU home game, one long freight can close Duffy, Boyd, Brooks, Lindsey and Main at once. Trainwatch alerts officers before Brooks backs up and routes EMS through the Robinson St underpass.

A 40-second 3D illustration of an OU gameday on a stylized map of Norman, not to scale. Postgame traffic fills the streets around the stadium and the tailgate lots. Vibration sensors south of Lindsey Street feel a northbound freight train before it reaches campus, and traffic officers are alerted first so they can hold Brooks Street traffic before cars stack up on the tracks. The long train then closes Lindsey, Brooks, Boyd, Duffy, Eufaula and Main streets at once. An ambulance answering a medical call in a tailgate lot east of the tracks is routed north through the Robinson Street underpass, toward the hospital at I-35 and Tecumseh Road. As the tail clears, the crossings reopen and the blockage is logged for the City.

Why it matters more now: in July 2024 Norman Regional closed the Porter Avenue ER and consolidated care at its HealthPlex campus at I-35 and Tecumseh. Emergencies east of the tracks now have to cross them. Norman Regional ↗

Norman is already in the federal pipeline

In August 2026 the city won $1.44M to plan a grade separation at Tecumseh Road. The downtown and campus crossings have no comparable record yet.
